Ignacio Barrón Viela has been appointed as president and chief executive officer of the St. Petersburg-based Florida Orchestra. He succeeds Mark Cantrell, who departed in April to become CEO of the Colorado Symphony. Barrón Viela goes to the Florida Orchestra from the Reno Philharmonic in Nevada, where he served as president and CEO. Before that, he was the executive director of the Billings Symphony in Montana. Born in Zaragoza, Spain, Barrón Viela is a classically trained cellist who spent more than a decade performing in orchestras and managing music projects internationally. Barrón Viela previously worked as a senior management consultant and project manager for energy companies, with projects in conventional power plants and renewable energy assets. Barrón Viela holds a Master of Industrial Engineering degree from the University of Zaragoza and an MBA from the USC Marshall School of Business, with an emphasis in arts leadership through the USC Thornton School of Music. Barrón Viela is an alumnus of the League of American Orchestras’ Emerging Leaders Program.
